Next N.A.F.A. Meeting….

Nuneaton Anti-Fascist Alliance will meet again 7-9pm on Tuesday 7th December at Edward Street Community Centre. This will be a chance to debrief, share experiences and lessons learnt from our campaign against the EDL, and start planning future activities. All welcome.

The People Of Nuneaton Stand Together

Today the English Defence League marched through Nuneaton in an attempt to stir up racial tension and create division in the community. Over 100 locals, both young and old, joined together with Nuneaton Anti-Fascist Alliance, trade unionist and socialist to show opposition to the violence and divisive politics of the EDL. The EDL’s line of campaigning against ‘radical Islam’ was soon shown to be complete rubbish as they threw firecrackers and flash grenades and spat at the local asian youth to try and provoke a reaction.

They claimed that the march would be peaceful but it only took a few minutes for this to turn out to be complete rubbish. As the thugs of the EDL took to drinking in local pubs and causing local people who were out doing their Saturday shopping hassle and disruption the people gathered with us heard members of HOPE not Hate, The Socialist Party and UAF speak about the evils of the EDL and what the local people of Nuneaton can and should do to oppose them.

A big thank you from the group goes to the Police who handled the situation today brilliantly.

PUBLIC MEETING: THURSDAY 25th NOVEMBER STAND UP FOR NUNEATON! STAND UP AGAINST THE ENGLISH DEFENCE LEAGUE!

7pm Thursday 25th November at The Khalifa Centre, 121 Edward Street CV11 5RD. Invited speakers include Suleman Nagdi from the Leicester Federation of Muslim Organisations, Leicester City Council, Hope Not Hate, Nuneaton Anti-Fascist Alliance & Warwickshire Police. Unite the community against those who would divide us! All welcome.

PROTEST AGAINST THE ENGLISH DEFENCE LEAGUE ON SATURDAY 27th NOVEMBER!

On Saturday 27th November the English Defence League (EDL) will march and rally in Nuneaton town centre. This will be their fourth visit in two months. The Borough Council tell people to “keep calm and carry on shopping” and local community ‘leaders’ are unwilling to show their opposition. It would be great if ignoring the EDL would make them go away but in fact it’s the lack of strong public opposition which gives them confidence to return and organise here. Nuneaton Anti-Fascist Alliance, in which the Socialist Party plays a leading role, calls on everyone who opposes the racist provocations of the EDL to stand up for their town, stand up against the EDL’s bully tactics - and publicly show their opposition.

Protest against the EDL on Saturday 27th November - assemble 12 noon in Church Street car park [this change to previous time advised by Police]. This is a safe, central location which Warwickshire Police have identified for us to use. We are in constant communication with the Police and they fully support the public’s right to express our opposition to the EDL. Please bring your banners, placards and noisemakers!

Nuneaton people stand up to the EDL

In response to the violent provocations of the English Defence League (EDL) at the Freedom of the Borough parades for both the Royal Fusiliers and the Ghurka’s in the last month Nuneaton Anti-Fascist Alliance (NAFA) planned and carried out a peaceful rally to demonstrate community solidarity and our rejection of the politics of religious hatred and social division of the EDL. Despite threats from the EDL to disrupt our meetings and attack us on days of action, local people gathered in Riversley Park, where we were joined by local youths and leaders of the Muslim community who stood in solidarity with us to show that the EDL are not welcome in Nuneaton. Meanwhile in Leicester the hooliganism of the EDL disrupted traffic, caused damage to shops and cost local taxpayers a fortune in police overtime.

This is the second event we have put together and they have both helped to established important links between local political groups, trade unions and faith groups and established an important foundation for organising against any future provocation that the EDL might decide to stage. Anyone interested in standing up to the racist violence of the EDL is encouraged to contact us and get involved.

No Pasaran!
